The Engegård Quartet with Olli Mustonen

We are delighted to delve deeper into our collaboration with the unique pianist and composer Olli Mustonen. Our recording of Mustonen’s first String Quartet, composed for us, together with his Piano Quintet, was joyfully received by critics and listeners alike. Inspired by an invitation to the legendary Amsterdam String Quartet Biennale 2026, we are back on the road together, performing Mustonen’s Piano Quintet and Milhaud’s La création du monde in an arrangement for the same instrumentation, together with a selection of works by Mozart, Beethoven, Brahms and/or Ravel.

Olli Mustonen’s extraordinary musicality cannot be praised enough. As a composer, he treads his own path, writing in a contemporary idiom on which there is no stamp. The pianist Mustonen leaves no listener unmoved; his eccentric, human playing and his great stage presence promises a unique concert experience. Olli describes many of his works as a journey from darkness towards light. The Engegård Quartet describes the appeal of Mustonen’s compositions: “We feel that Olli's works are deeply spiritual while they have an almost ritualistic magnetism. This raw irresistibility is made even more powerful by the tight structural forms Olli masters in his compositions.”
